The Smoking Popes at The Metro.
It was like a scene from an 80’s movie when the doors opened at the Metro on June 7, 2012. Misfits t-shirts, Alkaline Trio tattoos, spiked belts, and pink hair; Chicago’s favorite acts had once again landed upon the city.
Opening for Matt Skiba and the Sekrets, it was obvious that everyone was waiting for The Smoking Popes to perform. With high energy and their classic songs, the bar emptied at the Metro and instead flooded the floor to the stage, with singing and dancing everywhere you turned. Sounding just as good as they did back in 1991, Chicago’s very own once again reminded us why they were so iconic to music history, almost as much as the Metro has been home to them for nearly decades.
With a mishap with Matt Skiba’s premier set with the Sekrets, The Smoking Popes were definitely the highlight of the evening, if not the summer. Below are photos from their set, along with more information on the iconic band.
